Online video advertising 'a powerful tool'

Online video advertising will allow greater consumer engagement in marketing, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson from the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has extolled the virtues of online video advertising as a highly profitable marketing tool.

IAB programmes manager Jack Wallington said that the medium works well because the advertisements are highly specific and tailored to the website the user is visiting.

He said that this kind of advertising is a good way to get more involved with the consumer audience.

"Online video advertising allows for engagement with consumers like no other format. It is a powerful branding and messaging tool because people that choose to watch video clips online are receptive to adverts that are short and relevant to the content they want to watch," he said.

A 2008 report from Hitwise discovered that use of video websites in the UK increased by 178 per cent from February 2007 to the same month in 2008. The top 25 video sites, including YouTube, accounted for 2.2 per cent of all websites visited by UK users.
