Longer working hours for Britain

A new survey shows that much of the British workforce is working more than 40 hours per week.
Research from American Express Insurance Services has discovered that Britons in the north are working the longest hours in the country, with many putting in over 40 hours per week.
The survey, which involved 2,500 people, found that despite the belief that those in London and the south work the longest hours, it was actually workers in the north-east who spent most time in the office, with 55 per cent saying they work over 40 hours per week.
Chris Rolland, head of American Express Insurance Services, said that the findings show that the whole of Britain is affected.
"Despite the long acknowledged stereotype of long working hours in the south, the research gives evidence to suggest that increased working hours are spreading throughout the country. More and more people are faced with juggling more commitments on their precious free time," he said.
A recent study by US thinktank OTX said that evenings are now the busiest time of day for many people due to increased use of email and the internet.
