Homeworking 'could lead to isolation'

Employees who work from home could experience feelings of isolation which businesses should work to combat, a spokesperson has said.
Business owners should take care that home-based employees do not feel as if they are isolated from the company, it has been claimed.
Nesta Holden, campaigns and policy worker for the National Group on Homeworking, said that homeworkers should be treated the same as employees who work in the office, with even "simple" things such as receiving company emails and attending social outings making a difference to wellbeing.
"Business owners should engage their homeworkers. As an employee you need to think of ways to get around [feelings of isolation by others] in terms of communication and making people feel that they are still part of the organisation and the team," she said.
A study carried out by Enterprise Nation this year found that almost half of the two million home-based business owners in the UK are not achieving the work-life balance that they had originally hoped for.
