WPP sees revenues rise in Q1

Strong growth in continental Europe and Latin America pushed up sales for marketing and advertising group WPP over the first quarter of 2008.

WPP has reported that its sales rose by more than 14 per cent during the first quarter of 2008, boosted by strong growth in continental Europe and Latin America.

The marketing and advertising giant saw first-quarter organic revenues grow by five per cent, while sales were up by 14.1 per cent over the three months to March 31st, reaching £1.5 billion.

WPP stated that headline operating profits before interest and tax were up by eight per cent in the last quarter, from £859 million to £928 million.

However, the company warned that business had slowed significantly during March this year, particularly in North America and the UK. Growth in Latin America, Asia Pacific and continental Europe increased over the quarter, though western European markets softened slightly.

In a quarterly trading update, WPP stated that it remains on target to achieve operating margins of 15.5 per cent this year

WPP preliminary results for 2007 reveal that billings rose last year by more than five per cent to £31.7 billion, while revenue increased by nearly five per cent to £6.186 billion and headline operating profit before interest and tax rose by eight per cent to £928 million.
