A spokesperson at a London festival has said that design could help the UK economy.

The design industry has been hailed as a force which could guide the UK economy out of the doldrums caused by the credit crunch, Design Week reports.

Speaking at the fifth London Design Festival which took place this week, chairman Sir John Sorrell said that great innovations in creativity often happen under difficult conditions and that he has faith in designers to continue to produce good material.

"I believe creativity in adversity is the key to success. I believe in the power of design to solve problems and [foster] innovation. There is doom and gloom around, but when the going gets tough, design gets going," he said, according to Design Week.

The sixth festival is set to take place in September 2008.

In related news, architect and founder of Studio 8 CJ Lim has said that design in the UK is held back by government bodies which are too cautious and not willing enough to pioneer innovative ideas.
