Social networking 'a useful tool for marketing'

Sites such as Facebook and Bebo could be useful tools for marketers, it has been claimed.

The director of communications agency Society Media has said that social networking sites can be a valuable tool for marketers, but only if they are used in the correct ways.

Henry Palmer said that, although sites such as Facebook allow marketers to reach a demographic that more traditional means of marketing, advertising and communications have struggled to reach, they should not be used just for the sake of it.

"It's not good enough for an outsider from that community to suddenly go and set up a Facebook group and expect it to work. What you need [are] people who are part of that community already, who really know how the language works," he said.

Facebook claims to be the second most popular social media site in the world, with more than 70 million active users. Some 140 new applications are added per day.

Yesterday (May 21st), a new social networking site entitled Bookrabbit.com was launched for people who want to discuss and purchase books.
