The popularity of Facebook applications available to developers has spurred marketers to set aside a proportion of their budget for such applications, which can be downloaded and shared among friends for free via Facebook.

Applications typically take the form of a small computer game, and can be made by anybody with the relevant IT skills.

Film studios are beginning to create computer games themed by their latest release, in order to provide entertainment for Facebook users, but also with the hope that the imagery and enjoyment will stay in users' minds, and interest will be nurtured enough to make the users go to see the movie.

One example, as mentioned in the Times, has been Disney's creation of a Wall-E computer game. The game has just ten levels and the aim is simply to collect rubbish, but with the ability to share the game the popularity of it has been significant.

It is believed that such guerrilla marketing will continue to become more and more popular in the near future, as marketing firms look not just to good writers to get their message across, but to IT professionals, and those who can manipulate the success of applications.
