Yes, the New Year has arrived – offering hope, excitement, surprise but also perhaps some uncertainty, specifically regarding your career. The beginning of the year is a perfect time to review and think about where you want to be in a year’s time!

In this blog, we’re offering you some of our tips, thinking about whether or not your current career is right for you going forwards.

1. Is there room for progression in your current position?

Everyone should have the opportunity to grow their skills, expand their work and get that much deserved pay-rise! If you’re unsure whether or not there is the prospect of progression in your current role, it might not be right for you.

2. Does the culture of your company suit you?

Being aligned with the values of your employer and your peers helps you to feel more comfortable and passionate about your work. Also, it’s important to maintain great working relationships with your co-workers. If you don’t think you are quite suited to the culture or don’t have the strongest of connections with peers, it could mean this isn’t the right job for you.

3. Are you inspired by the work you do?

Having a passion and interest in your duties makes all the difference, and can make it so much easier to come into the office. If you aren’t feeling the passion you once did for your job, and aren’t getting satisfaction, it could be time to consider moving on.

4. If you need flexibility, does your current job offer you it?

Especially for people with children or other commitments, the ability to work slightly different hours, have shorter days, extra holiday or other arrangements is essential. Does your current role offer you the flexibility you may need? If not, a career change to a position that suits you better might be the best step as the New Year advances.

5. Is your salary and benefit scheme aligned with others in similar positions to you, and does it fairly reflect your value to the business?

Feeling valued is so important, and knowing that you’re being paid fairly for your work really helps to improve your workplace happiness. If you don’t feel you’re getting a fair salary/wage for your contributions, maybe you should consider a change.
