Wow, what a year! It is certainly an interesting time to be in creative recruitment. The market has been significantly impacted by various factors this year which has sparked changes across the board.
A major challenge for all markets has been the economic uncertainty revolving around Brexit. This has led to tightening budgets and a reduction in confidence which has resulted in recruitment freezes and restructuring in some cases.
Being a creative recruitment specialist, I see first-hand the impact developing technologies and trends have on the job market. 2019 has been another year of technological advancement, with the introduction of new creative tools and upgrades of current software such as Magento 2. Demand has risen for creatives with specific experience both in agency and increasingly in-house.
Investment in Internal Recruitment Teams and IR35
I am blessed to work with some of the largest consumer creative teams in the country. It’s been great to see them invest in their in-house talent teams and applicant tracking system. This has led to changes in the way they recruit and improvements to strategic and long-term planning.
The coupling of stronger internal processes and tighter budgets has resulted in many of my clients considering their talent strategy as a whole rather than week to week. Which has in some cases led to a reduction in frequency of freelance projects.
With the threat of IR35 in April some of my clients are looking at the wider team and permanent solutions. As a result, many of my freelance creatives are also looking to move into permanent. This is a huge turnaround from the past five years. The only anomaly to this has been conceptual design roles.
As a result of the above some of my freelance creatives are becoming more open to permanent opportunities.
We hear frustration from candidates about lack of communication from internal and external recruiters and poor experiences throughout application, interview and offer. Poor candidate experience can have a detrimental impact on the reputation of your employer brand and affect the success of your recruitment strategy. We have been working really closely with our clients this year to better understand candidates’ perspective and requirements.
In this new year, I predict that hopefully, with the economy stabilising, we will see a turn in the market and for a fresh breath of life in the freelance world! We also expect there to be more clarity with regards to IR35 and a clearer path forward for both contractors and clients.
