The diversity issue

In the last few years a large number of companies have adapted their advertising strategies to be more inclusive of minority groups, however there is still some way to go and many brands are still criticised for failing to represent the diversity of life in Britain.

Many think, including marketers themselves, that this could be due to marketing teams not being representative of these minority groups, meaning that their marketing output is not reflective of society. Marketing teams report that there is a distinct lack of employees with physical or mental disabilities within their teams, and even fewer LGBTQ people and people of ethnic minority.

Over the last 10 years many marketers feel that their brand, or brands that they work on, have become more diverse, with gender relations being the most improved area. There has been a significant increase in the number of female-focussed ad campaigns in recent years with the Sport England ‘This Girl Can’ campaign being at the fore-front. However gender identity, as well as physical disability, are areas which are yet to see any dramatic marketing shift towards them.

On 1st June Pride Month began it’s 2018 global campaign , raising awareness of the LGBTQ community, and to have this issue once again firmly in the public eye can be nothing but positive, encouraging both hiring managers to examine company attitudes towards diversity and to look at incorporating different backgrounds and lifestyles into teams; and marketers to ensure their brands and advertising are inclusive.

The Equality Act 2010 brings together 116 separate pieces of legislation in to one single Act, with the aim of eliminating discrimination and reducing inequalities in the workplace.
