The big question on circulating my professional network is who prefers working from home vs being in the office.
Some people had never experienced remote work before lockdown and depending on the situation and their own personal preferences, the response has been mixed.
Many I speak to can’t see how they will ever return to the daily commute and 9-5 in the office and they are worried about being ‘forced’ back into a lifestyle they no longer want to have. However, it seems an equal number can't wait to be surrounded by people and the structure of office life - so who wins?
Returning to the office has been so polarising for workforces leading HR teams to reassess how they apply policies, rather than loose key members of their teams.
This also extends to future employees, it is now one of the first questions I get asked – ‘what will happen after COVID?’ although it may not be easy to see an end in sight right now, it is important to future plan.
“Many of our trends highlight a thread of individualism, a sense that employees expect a flexible, tailored working relationship with their employer. Therefore, line managers will be increasingly expected to manage people as individuals – helping people achieve work–life balance, supporting people to be fulfilled in their roles and developing their skillsets in line with their professional interests.”
It maybe that ‘one size fits all’ flexible working strategy just doesn’t fit all anymore, and that actually we need to make changes or face losing out to those that do.
That conversation may not be an easy one in the business; this article for Harvard Business Review has some really helpful advice for those line manager caught between a team’s wishes and a company policy - What to Do If Your Team Doesn’t Want to Go Back to the Office (
What do you think? Are you an office or a home person, or something in between? Are you a manager, wondering if your team will ever return and how you will explain that to you boss? I would love to know your thoughts.
