The future of video interviewing

The question has been asked recently whether the recent surge in virtual interviewing will eventually signal the end of the face-to-face interview?

We believe that traditional interview processes aren’t going away any time soon and still have a very important place in the recruitment process, however, the time and cost-saving benefits of interviewing someone via video and its ability to transcend geographical barriers are a real benefit in the current market place to both recruiters and candidates.

Research from job board Monster, found that almost half of respondents use video interviews as part of the selection process, demonstrating that the technology has been embraced more than we thought and isn’t now for tech innovators only. A minority of recruiters (7%) do not use any form of face-to-face interview at all but we believe that combining tech with human interaction will always gain the best results for us and our clients.

When it first arrived, video interviewing sparked several concerns. One of the chief ones was its ability to allow recruiters to see candidates early in the process. Some feared this might encourage discrimination on appearance. We believe that it will ultimately come down to employers and recruitment firms putting robust policies and procedures in place to ensure their recruitment practices aren’t discriminatory to avoid this.

Another concern was that good candidates may be overlooked purely because they were unable to acquit themselves well on video – there is still a generational gap between Generation X and Y so would those brought up on technology have a head-start?  Undoubtedly, people skills are vital in most roles that we recruit which always puts the ability to communicate confidently at the top of the list of most desirable traits – something that can be easily analysed through a simple video interview, we can see how they talk, dress, and present their ideas, and decide on whether they would be a strong fit for our clients.

Candidate experience has to be at the forefront of everything we do as recruiters and the option to interview remotely offers candidates the opportunity to ‘meet’ at a time and place that suits them and in a way that doesn’t impact their current productivity and in a place in which they feel comfortable, confident and relaxed.

Technology is changing the way we do almost everything, and it seems that job interviews are no exception.
