2020 vision - freelance & nfp market review

2019 saw the continuation of the digital boom with regards to marketing roles. The growth in demand for specialist digital skills such as PPC, SEO and CRM has been significant. This has also in turn led to an increase in project work as our clients look to resource developments and changes to their workflows.

 

We have also seen an increase in temporary roles to support teams throughout restructuring, new business acquisitions and major changes to operations. Whether you can blame Brexit or not, there has been an inclination towards temporary support rather than increasing permanent headcount.

 

From a candidate perspective, remote working and flexibility is in high demand. Many are prioritising work life balance over financial packages and benefits. Most of my clients now have flexible working policies and some now market themselves and their vacancies with this front and centre. This always has a significant impact on the number of applicants for each role.

 

In the Midlands we have seen an increase in senior candidates actively looking for new opportunities and a drop in junior candidates. Potentially another nod towards confidence in the market. However for our clients this has meant that budgeting for some roles has been more challenging.

 

With candidate shortages, any delay in the recruitment process can be detrimental and those all-important star candidates can get snapped up. We have been working closely with our clients to bring efficiencies to their processes and improve the return on investment.

 

For the year ahead, I think as confidence in the market increases so will the job market. However demand for digital skills is set to increase, so shortages may still be a concern. Keeping momentum in the recruitment process and identifying those perfect matches quickly will be of top priority. Working closely with our clients gives us the insight into their business to ensure we can act quickly on their behalf, securing the best possible talent.
