Did you know the CV, or some form of it, was first invented over five hundred years ago by Leonardo Da Vinci, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that it became an expected item during the employment process.

Over the past few years we have seen a growing number of new tools and techniques when analysing candidates. So, is the CV now an old-fashioned, outdated way of getting your experience across to prospective employers? 

Recruitment grapevine think so, when listing top trends for 2019 their number three was: ‘Ditching the CV’ 

Now, I know the blood sweat and tears that has gone into the multiple versions of CVs on your desktop… and before you hit the delete key let’s take a minute to consider the key drivers. 

LinkedIn – when launched in 2003 LinkedIn set out to create a fast, powerful professional network, I think it’s fair to say they’ve nailed it! Your LinkedIn profile is one of the most important elements of your career tool kit. Acting as an online CV, it also enables recommendations, and a publishing platform. Most hiring teams will look for your LinkedIn before agreeing to interview you – so make sure it doesn’t contradict your CV or application form.

Culture - increasingly organisations are prioritising cultural fit over technical ability. This is hard to translate on paper; this is why we spend time developing our understanding of the organisations and candidates we partner with - aiming to provide a perfect match.

Video - since the launch of blueskiesLIVE we have seen first-hand the benefit of using video to add personalisation into the recruitment process. Video brings candidates closer to the client and compliments a CV but doesn’t replace it.

Face to face – there is a real move towards meeting candidates so don’t be surprised if your future employer invites you to a speed dating event or asks you to meet the team for breakfast.

AI – with the increasing demands on HR functions, AI has been introduced to reduce time consuming activities like manually screening CVs. Obviously, this comes with its benefits however puts a barrier between the organisation and the future employee and in fact relies on either a CV or detailed job application!

What does all this mean for you, these days there is quite a bit more to consider than simply submitting your CV and attending an interview. However, the CV does remain an important starter point to all recruitment discussions.

If there is one thing I know for sure, there is no one size fits all when it comes to recruitment. For every progressive hiring team there is a traditional one and for every AI there is a three-hour presentation!
