is your portfolio a world class shop window?

Last week we got an opportunity to speak to second year designers at Birmingham University. Natasha and I shared our knowledge on the creative recruitment industry as well as tips on portfolio and CV creation. We had a chance to review some of the portfolios, it was great to see some of the awesome talent out there! 
Your portfolio and CV are a crucial part of the career tool kit and unfortunately can often lack the attention they deserve. 
You could think of your portfolio as a shop window to you. Let’s consider for a moment why Harrods spend thousands on their famous festive shop windows. Visitors from around the world come to see these incredible displays of creativity, are then tempted inside for their gift shopping. Last year Harrods revealed a total revenue rise of 6.8% and over £2 billion in sales for the second year running, despite significant decline in the retail industry.
Not only do these windows stand out from the crowded high street and capture the attention of the passers-by, they bring those customers in year on year to see what they are going to do next. 
So, if like Harrod’s you want to engage your audience, galvanise them into action and keep their interest consider these thoughts.  
  • Make it creative – you need to stand out. How do you think differently to others? How is your approach different? 
  • Tell a story - for each piece of work, outline the brief, your solution and the results. Build a picture of the success you’ve had. 
  • Make it accessible – perhaps a website with your work on or a well-presented digital PDF 
  • Your credibility - get as many commercial examples into your work as possible including recommendations and quotes from external stakeholders. 
  • Be bold - talk confidently and enthusiastically about your work, it’ll help others buy in to you.
  • Product placement - put your best work at the start and the end of the document. You should also tailor for specific roles, considering the most relevant examples for the client.
