The Midlands agency space has continued to thrive despite challenging market conditions. We’ve seen an increase in the need for digital skillsets, specifically more niche roles and the need for freelance support in these areas is more desired than ever. Salaries have remained consistent with last year, slight increases in some areas but no huge variances. Good candidates are still in demand (and can be hard to find) and they have multiple options when looking for new roles. Candidates’ main reasons for looking to leave their current role isn’t necessarily around salary, one of the key reasons cited has been unmanageable workloads and how this is impacting on client service or the ability to produce the best possible work for clients. Company culture, soft benefits and all-important flexibility also feature high on candidates’ wish lists.
From a freelance perspective we have seen a huge increase in the need for digital skills, with UX and UI featuring high in clients resourcing requirements. Across the board core agency roles have remained important with traditional skillsets in demand with clients needing to replace leavers and recruit new talent in line with client wins. We have also seen an increase in agencies looking for candidates whose values are well aligned with their own and vice versa.
One thing I have seen grow in importance for candidates is the F word - flexibility. That doesn’t just mean part time working, we know that’s not always possible in agency life, but flexible hours to avoid the traffic or a school drop off, the ability to work from home as and when needed or on a more regular basis etc. Candidates are crying out to work for a business that actively encourages this and sees the value of it to both employee and employer, and not just a business that says they do!
